Strategic Risk Discussions at Lockyer Valley Regional Council

Published on 31 July 2025

Background

Lockyer Valley Regional Council’s Audit & Risk Committee was preparing for their annual planning day and sought a sector-specific briefing to frame the risks, challenges, and opportunities facing Queensland local governments. The Council aimed to ground their strategic discussions in a broader risk context before focusing on issues unique to their community.

Objectives

  • Provide a comprehensive overview of global and local risks relevant to the Queensland local government sector.
  • Stimulate meaningful discussion among Audit & Risk Committee members and the Executive Leadership Team (ELT).
  • Help align the Committee’s planning with an informed understanding of emerging and ongoing risks.

Approach

To deliver this, Lockyer Valley Regional Council engaged LGMS Risk & Resilience Coordinator Paul Bright. Paul crafted a tailored presentation that began with an overview of worldwide risk trends, gradually narrowing the focus to specific risks impacting LVRC. The session combined data insights from the Annual Risk Report with interactive facilitation to encourage active discussion.

Impact

The presentation successfully sparked focused and relevant conversations on risk, empowering the Audit & Risk Committee and ELT to better understand and prioritise risks within their local government context.

Insights for Other Councils

LGMS recommends all Scheme members take advantage of their Regional Risk Coordinator’s independent expertise. Engaging the RRC as a neutral, knowledgeable facilitator can elevate risk discussions and support more effective governance.
