Risk Management at Scenic Rim Regional Council

Published on 31 July 2025

Background

With a small governance and risk team, Scenic Rim Regional Council faced the challenge of improving risk management within limited organisational resources. Finding the right balance between seeking assistance and maintaining internal capacity was critical.

Objectives

  • Enhance risk management practices despite team size constraints.
  • Maintain timely access to expert guidance without over-reliance.
  • Foster ongoing collaboration that supports practical and effective risk solutions.

Approach

To address this, the LGMS Risk & Resilience Coordinator (RRC) became a regular participant in the Council’s Quarterly Internal Risk Reference Group meetings. By attending and providing updates, the RRC stays closely connected to the Council’s evolving risk landscape and history.

Impact

Regular involvement of the RRC has helped Scenic Rim maintain what they describe as the ‘Goldilocks zone’—receiving just the right amount of support. The RRC’s familiarity with Council’s circumstances enables timely, relevant advice and suggestions, helping the team recognise when and where external assistance can make the biggest difference.

Insights for Other Councils

Embedding the Regional Risk Coordinator into regular risk governance forums creates a trusted partnership that balances independence with collaboration. This approach ensures councils receive timely expert input without overwhelming internal resources.

Testimonial

"Having our RRC regularly attend our quarterly meetings ensures timely advice where it matters."
— Scott Williams, Scenic Rim Regional Council

Conclusion

Scenic Rim Regional Council’s ongoing collaboration with LGMS through regular participation in the Internal Risk Reference Group has proven to be a practical, efficient way to enhance risk management. This partnership empowers the Council to navigate challenges with confidence, leveraging external expertise in a way that complements their internal capabilities.
